my story:
My name is Adam Rodrigues and I was born to be fat, at least that is what I was led to believe. When my mom brought me home from the hospital, the legend is that the neighborhood kids gave me the nickname “500 pound baby” (just what I needed to start my foundation of confidence). As the years went on I was the 'fat kid'. We all know him, the boy with the size "Husky" Levi jeans, more excited about the corndogs than the rides at a carnival, always sweating a little more than the rest of the kids. Yup, that was me. Look out ladies.
Just before high school (thank God) my mom realized my weight was not healthy. She made an agreement with me - my eating was restricted to only foods SHE chose for the next month and if I lost 20 pounds, she would buy me a whole new wardrobe for my freshman year. I decided to abide. That summer I went from a size 38” waist to a 33” waist and lost well over 20 pounds. Good bye husky pants, and hello Z. Cavaricci!
Throughout high school and into my adult years, my weight fluctuated constantly. Crash and fad diets never led to anything sustainable and exercise was never made a priority. I tried calorie restriction, weight watchers, low-fat, Atkins, South Beach, you name it. They all helped me lose weight, but were incredibly difficult to maintain so inevitably I not only gained back the weight, but it increased. I grew up in an overweight family with the deterministic idea that we were genetically predisposed to be heavy. I almost got to a point where I simply accepted that...ALMOST!
Now 40 years old and being a married man and father, I made the decision that there is nothing more important than being healthy for myself, my wife, and our children. Over the last several years, information on exercise and nutrition abounds and has become ubiquitous as the subject of innumerable books, magazines, television shows, and websites. With so many resources at my fingertips, I no longer had an excuse. I decided to make my mission a way to find a sustainable healthy lifestyle that works for me.
Today, I am in the best shape of my life. I feel incredible and secure that I am the best me I can be for my family and myself. How did I do it? I wish I could give you a simple “just do this” answer, but when it comes to nutrition and fitness, that is not realistic. Through my studies I have found that this answer can be many different things for many different people. We are not made to be a “one size fits all” program. We are all built differently both mentally and physically. Nutrition, fitness, and sustainable health are about the individual.
I believe that we all have what it takes to sustain a healthy life. Many of us just need a tether and helping hand from someone with the knowledge, support and genuine care to get us there. The struggles of health and body image are a personal matter for me. Anchor fitness and nutrition was created because I want to help each of you become the best and healthiest you. Let's get started now. I have the knowledge, but the answers are found within you.
